Flaky, buttery puff pastry layered with savory ham, melted cheese, and a touch of mustard for the perfect bite-sized appetizer or snack.

Servings: 12 stacks

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 15-20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet (about 8 oz / 225g) puff pastry, thawed
  • 6-8 slices deli ham (Black Forest or honey ham work well)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (Gruyère, Swiss, or sharp cheddar)
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard (or whole-grain mustard for texture)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley or chives, finely chopped (optional, for garnish)
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Prep the Puff Pastry

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry sheet slightly (if needed) and cut into 12 equal squares (about 2.5-3 inches each).
  3. Place half of the squares on the baking sheet—these will be the bases.

2. Assemble the Stacks

  1. Spread a thin layer of mustard on each pastry base.
  2. Fold a slice of ham to fit the pastry square and place on top.
  3. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the ham.
  4. Top with the remaining pastry squares and press the edges lightly to seal.

3. Bake to Golden Perfection

  1. Brush the tops with beaten egg for a shiny, golden finish.
  2. Optionally, sprinkle with black pepper or extra cheese.
  3. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until puffed and golden brown.

4. Serve & Enjoy

  1. Let cool slightly, then garnish with chopped parsley or chives.
  2. Serve warm as an appetizer, brunch item, or party snack!
